What is Truth – Part 1

What is Truth – Part 2
November 3, 2017

"You cannot know what truth is if you do not first know who truth is."

Have you ever noticed how so many news reporters give out information as though it is fact? Yet, I wonder how many of them have actually witnessed the event they are reporting. The same is true for internet studies, social media polls, and supposedly unbiased surveys. Even people we know personally, whether a friend, coworker, or an acquaintance, will often speak statements about things as if they really knew first hand- though it’s likely just something they heard. So much of what is considered truth in our society today has been completely blurred to the point that it’s hard to differentiate fact and fiction.

This is nothing new under the sun. In fact, in Jesus’ time on the earth they had much the same problems as we do today. Sure, there were no television reporters or social media sites. But there were people, and they were influenced by thoughts from the enemy just like they are today. I submit to you that even back in Jesus’ day it was hard to differentiate truth from falsehood.

In John 18:37-38, it says Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him.”

“You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

This account takes place at the time when Jesus stood trial before Pilate to find out if He would be released or sentenced to be crucified. After questioning Jesus, we see Pilate make a statement to Him when he asks “What is truth?” and walks away. My question is why did Pilate say this to Jesus? How come he didn’t just say “whatever man” and walk away?

I believe the reason for Pilates question was to make a point that no one really knows what truth is anyway. I mean, who can you believe is telling the truth when the world is so full of lies? In essence, Pilate was saying, “there is no real truth, because in reality, all truth is subjective.” Sadly, this is how most of the world believes today.

We know that God is a God of truth, and He created everything to be pure and perfect. Before sin entered the planet, truth was all there was. So what happened? What happened to the truth that makes people wonder “What is truth?” I mean we can’t trust social media sites for truth. We can’t always trust people. We definitely can’t trust the news to always bring truth. So where did truth go? What happened?
